Barbara Brown is one of those designers you want more and more of. She has an aesthetic sensibility that is clear and precise and guided by an appreciation for finding beauty in the finest of details. She knows what her clients want and she strives endlessly to give them that and more, to educate them to make the best decisions and to create spaces that reflect who and where they are, with scale, balance, beauty and function. It is a pleasure to deal with a designer who knows how the industry works, what can be realistically achieved, and who manages everyone’s expectations with

such ease. Barbara’s style is one of deep commitment to the details and of working together throughout the whole process to ensure the final product is perfect. Barbara came to New York in the early 90s to change careers and to follow her dream of becoming an interior designer after practicing as a private speech language pathologist. She loves to travel, to experience different cultures and to find the wonderful treasures that are only uncovered when one walks down the hidden streets.

When Barbara came to Aimara in search of a dining table for her clients (a Tokyo based couple with a pied-a-terre in an exclusive post-modern Manhattan building overlooking the Hudson river), Barbara wanted a luxurious, graceful dining table which could most of the time seat 4-6 people, but could open up to seat double that. The table, that was to be set in an almost fully glassed-in room, also needed to combine well with the Asian influenced interiors of the apartment and be a piece so light and airy that it would appear to float in the sky. And so it was then, with those directives, that the Brown dining table was born. A 50” round dining table in a unique Macassar Ebony wood, lacquer in a high gloss finish and an ebonized skirt and base to add emphasis to the top and ground the table in its space. The table extended to 94” with two 22” extension leaves; support legs were added for stability; and hand-cast bronze sabots in a Florentine tone provided the finishing touch. The table was then accented with an exquisite clear glass Venetian chandelier flecked with gold and shaped to reinforce the curved form of the legs. The result is a light and timeless design which depending on the wood combinations and details can be graphic and modern or much more subtle and classic.

From Aimara’s side, it is only until after a piece is finished and delivered to our client’s satisfaction that we rest at ease. So when we received Barbara’s email saying that her client “loves her table”, we were happy. We asked Barbara how the experience of working with Aimara had been and her response was: “The process [of working with Aimara] was amazing and the communication excellent. From the finished drawings, to the use of digital imagery and updates during production, to the process of selecting veneers and the quick ship of samples, made it all possible to control the product. Pricing was also very favorable, and the service and quality of the workmanship, exceptional.”

Barbara mentioned just the other day that the dining room is still not complete, as chairs and fabric have not yet been selected. She has been looking at Aimara’s art deco side chairs which she believes would be perfect with mohair upholstery. At Aimara we care for each of our clients, and it is always an honor when a client is so content with our furniture that they want more. We look forward to working with Barbara on this and future projects and to provide those special interiors with the unique and personalized design of our designers’ custom creations. |
